1. Think in sightlines
Take a look at your garden and ask yourself: what may pop out? Work with sightlines that lead to an eye-catcher, such as a flowering shrub, water ornament or seating area. This creates both serenity and surprise. TIP: Hydrangea Fire Light is a wonderful eye-catcher with its lush, full flowers that colour from white to fiery red.
2. Play with shapes
Round, organic or straight: choose shapes that suit your taste and the space. Straight lines work well in modern gardens, round shapes give a playful effect and are ideal for smaller gardens. TIP: You can also play with leaf shapes and colours. For example, the beautiful large leaves of Gatsby® Girl, the yellow pinnate leaves of Lemony Lace® or the almost black leaves of Summer Wine™ Black.
3. Mix materials wisely
Think of contrasts between wood, stone and greenery. For example, combine a natural-looking path of tree bark with modern steel edging, or a gravel path with soft ground covers in between.
4. Choose ease of use
Do you want a place to lounge, a play area or just a low-maintenance garden? Adapt your design to your needs. A grass area is nice for playing children, a raised border makes gardening easier.
5. Keep maintenance in mind
Choose plants that suit your time and energy. Clusters of the same shrubs give peace of mind and are easy to look after. Think of ground-covering perennials or slow-growing shrubs. TIP: All muscle shrubs in the Double Play® range do well in groups and are practically maintenance-free!
