Buddleja (butterfly bush) – summer bloomer that attracts butterflies and bees

Buddleja, better known as butterfly bush, is one of the most popular garden plants. And with good reason: from June until late autumn, it produces long, fragrant flower panicles that attract butterflies, bees and bumblebees. It is a strong, low-maintenance shrub that is suitable for borders, bedding and – in the case of compact varieties – even for pots.

At Proven Winners®, you will find Buddlejas that offer that little bit extra: compact growth, exceptionally long flowering and, what's more, varieties that are non-invasive. So you can enjoy fragrance, colour and nature-friendliness, year after year.

Why no garden is complete without Buddleja

Buddleja is a true summer bloomer that brings life to the garden. Where many plants bloom for only a short time, this shrub provides flowers for months on end and attracts a host of beneficial insects. Buddleja is also an easy plant to grow: fast-growing, hardy and simple to care for. It fits equally well in a natural, insect-friendly garden or a modern border.

Three Buddleja series, three times the gardening joy

The Proven Winners® range consists of three series, each with its own character and applications.

• Buddleja Chip® – including Lilac Chip and Blue Chip – are low-growing butterfly bushes that are ideal for small gardens and large pots. Despite their compact size, they bloom profusely and attract lots of insects. An added bonus: the Chip® series is non-invasive, as the seeds of these varieties are sterile, preventing them from spreading in the wild.
• Buddleja Pugster® – including Pugster® Pinker and Pugster® Indigo – are compact and sturdy, but with strikingly large, fragrant flowers. This unique combination makes the Pugster® series a striking addition to the Buddleja range.
• Buddleja Miss series – including Miss Ruby and Miss Violet – are medium-sized shrubs of approximately 150 cm in height that are real eye-catchers in the border. With their rich flowering and unusual colours, they add plenty of summer charm. The Miss varieties are also non-invasive.

Where does Buddleja feel at home?

Buddleja is a real sun worshipper. The more sun it gets, the richer the flowering and the more butterflies it attracts. The shrub has few soil requirements, as long as the soil is well-drained.

In borders, Buddleja combines beautifully with other summer-flowering shrubs such as Hydrangea and Deutzia. Compact varieties, such as the Chip® series, are also perfect for adding colour to a patio or balcony.

Easy to care for, richly rewarded

One of the reasons Buddleja is so popular is its ease of maintenance. After a few years in the garden, butterfly bushes are quite drought-resistant, but give young plants and shrubs some extra water during dry summers. In spring, you can add compost or organic fertiliser to stimulate growth and flowering. Prune Buddleja back severely in early spring – often to 15 to 30 cm above the ground, depending on the species. Because Buddleja flowers on new wood, ensures fresh shoots and exuberant flowering in summer.

Buddleja in your garden

Buddleja, or butterfly bush, is a low-maintenance and versatile shrub that adds colour to gardens for months and attracts insects. With its long flowering period, strong growth and easy care, it is a plant that no garden should be without. The Proven Winners® range with Chip®, Pugster® and Miss offers a choice for every situation: from compact pot plants to colourful eye-catchers in the border.
