Rhaphiolepis (Indian hawthorn): elegant, evergreen and wonderfully fragrant

Looking for a shrub that remains attractive all year round? Then Rhaphiolepis, also known as Indian hawthorn, is an excellent choice. This graceful, evergreen shrub combines glossy leaves with richly flowering clusters of white or pink flowers in spring.

The Proven Winners® range includes the La Vida® series, which includes La Vida® Grande and La Vida® Más. La Vida Mas® has been specially selected for its compact growth habit, excellent re-flowering and good disease resistance. La Vida® Grande also has excellent disease resistance and attractive peach-orange young shoots.

Location: sun, warmth and a sheltered spot

Rhaphiolepis feels most at home in a sunny, warm location. A spot in partial shade is also suitable. Well-drained soil is essential, as this shrub does not tolerate wet feet well. The plant can withstand heat and drought very well but has limited hardiness (frost resistant to around -10 degrees). In colder climates, it is best to place Rhaphiolepis in a sheltered or frost-free location so that it can safely survive the coldest periods. Due to its compact growth habit, La Vida® Mas is particularly suitable for planting in a pot, making it easy to move to a frost-free location during cold periods.

Care: simple and low maintenance

Although Rhaphiolepis looks elegant, it requires surprisingly little care. Light pruning after flowering keeps it compact and full in shape. Young plants need a little extra water during dry periods, but once established, it is very drought tolerant. An annual application of compost supports flowering and foliage.

Application: from Mediterranean border to terrace plant

Rhaphiolepis is versatile. It thrives as a solitary plant in a sunny border, but also in group plantings or rock gardens. The plant is also salt-tolerant, making it very suitable for coastal gardens. Thanks to its compact, dense growth, Rhaphiolepis is also suitable as a hedge. Combine it with lavender or olive for a Mediterranean look, or use it in modern gardens as a fragrant eye-catcher.

Rhaphiolepis in your garden!

Rhaphiolepis is an elegant, evergreen shrub that remains attractive throughout the year. The Proven Winners® selections from the La Vida™ series combine rich flowering, compact growth and improved hardiness. This makes Rhaphiolepis an ideal choice for those looking for a low-maintenance shrub that combines elegance, fragrance and vigour.
