Hibiscus (rose of Sharon) – tropical summer blooms for every garden

Hibiscus (rose of Sharon or Chinese rose) is the shrub that provides your garden with beautiful flowers from summer until well into autumn. The shrub has large trumpet-shaped flowers in white, pink, purple or blue, often with a contrasting centre. Just when many plants become less interesting, Hibiscus continues to bloom. It is a real season extender.

Why you want Hibiscus

• Long flowering season: colour from midsummer to autumn.
• Large flowers, little fuss: striking, but easy to maintain.
Magnet for pollinators: bees and butterflies appreciate the flowers.
• Versatile: alone, in the border or as a playful hedge.

Location & planting

Place a hibiscus in full sun; the sunnier and warmer it is, the longer and more abundant the flowering will be. The soil must be well-drained—no wet feet. The plant prefers a somewhat drier location. Plant young shrubs in spring or late summer so that they can take root properly.

Care without worries

Hibiscus is easy to care for. Give extra water during dry periods (especially in the first year), add some compost or organic fertiliser in spring, and prune lightly in early spring to maintain shape. Remove any wilted flowers.

Hibiscus from Proven Winners®

Proven Winners® has developed a beautiful variety: Hibiscus Sugar Tip. Sugar Tip is a real all-round mood maker for the garden: its creamy white and blue-green variegated leaves immediately add character, and in summer it blooms long and richly with double light pink flowers with a red heart. The shrub is fairly compact, making it suitable for smaller gardens. In addition, no seeds are formed because it is a variety that has been specially developed to prevent this. This means that the plant does not spread. Once well rooted, the plant is also very drought-tolerant

Hibiscus in your garden!

With its exotic flowers and summery appearance, Hibiscus is the perfect eye-catcher in any garden. Plant it solo in a sunny spot or let it shine in a border between ornamental grasses and perennials. Wherever you plant it, Hibiscus will bring colour, energy and a holiday feeling to your garden for months on end.

FAQ

Is Hibiscus hardy in the United Kingdom and Europe?

Yes, Hibiscus is very hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to around -20 °C.

When does Hibiscus flower?

Flowering usually lasts from July to September. In a warm autumn, this can continue a little longer. Hibiscus flowers on new wood that is formed in the same year.

How and when should I prune Hibiscus?

Prune lightly in late winter or early spring. This will keep the shrub compact and encourage strong branching and rich flowering.

Why do the buds fall off or why does Hibiscus flower poorly?

This is often due to overly wet soil, too little sun or late night frost that damages the young buds. A warm, sheltered spot and well-drained soil will ensure better flowering.

Does Hibiscus attract bees and butterflies?

Certainly, the large flowers of Hibiscus are attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.
