Forsythia
Bring spring into your home with Forsythia from Proven Winners®! Even before the leaves appear, the branches burst into bloom with yellow flowers. Strong, reliable and a joy in the garden every year.
Forsythia – a golden start to spring
Forsythia is the shrub that heralds the arrival of spring. Even before the leaves appear, the branches are already covered with bright yellow flowers in March. This makes Forsythia one of the first plants to bring colour to the garden.
What makes Forsythia so special?
Forsythia is a deciduous shrub that originates from Asia. It grows wide and bushy, with an average height of 1.5 to 2.5 metres. The Proven Winners® range includes Forsythia Flying Machine®, a variety that stands out for its larger flowers, longer flowering period and healthy growth. Flying Machine® grows to a height of between 170 and 190 cm, depending on location and pruning.
Its most unique feature is that forsythia blooms on bare wood. While most shrubs are still dormant, forsythia already has dense clusters of yellow flowers. These are followed by fresh green leaves that remain attractive well into autumn.
Why choose Forsythia?
• Early flowering – colour in the garden even before spring officially begins.
• Iconic accent – a golden cloud of flowers in March.
• Low maintenance – hardy, robust and easy to prune.
• Extra ornamental value – Flying Machine® offers larger flowers and longer flowering.
The right spot in the garden
Forsythia loves sun: the more sunlight, the richer the flowering. However, the plant also tolerates partial shade. Forsythia feels at home in almost any well-drained soil, as long as the ground is not too wet in winter. In addition, the plant is versatile, suitable for group planting, as a hedge or simply planted on its own, because Forsythia is an excellent spring eye-catcher.
Carefree maintenance
Forsythia requires little attention:
• Prune immediately after flowering to stimulate new shoots.
• Remove older branches from time to time to keep the shrub young.
• Water young plants during dry periods.
• Work compost or organic fertiliser into the soil in spring for extra vigour.
Use in the garden
Forsythia is very versatile. Planted alone, it steals the show in spring, but in groups it creates an impressive ribbon of yellow flowers. It also looks beautiful as a loose hedge or in combination with other spring bloomers, such as Chaenomeles or Exochorda.
