Rhododendron: evergreen powerhouse with a sea of flowers

Rhododendron is a true classic in the garden. In spring, it bursts into bloom with clusters of flowers in various colours. After flowering, the sturdy, dark green foliage provides structure. Because this shrub thrives in partial shade and acidic soil, it is often found in borders, under trees or along paths. As rhododendron is evergreen, you have a plant that has something to offer all year round.

What makes Rhododendron so popular?

Rhododendron has been a garden favourite for years. The shrub flowers profusely in late spring and early summer, often with full clusters of flowers in a variety of colours. Even after flowering, the shrub remains attractive, thanks to its sturdy, glossy foliage that provides structure in the border. Within the Proven Winners® range, there are also varieties that offer something extra. Bollywood®, for example, provides colour not only during the flowering period, but also afterwards with its strikingly variegated foliage. The Perfecto Mundo® varieties go one step further: in addition to flowering in spring, they flower again in autumn.

The right spot & soil for a rhododendron

Rhododendrons thrive best in a spot with light morning sun. Too much afternoon sun can damage the leaves, so a spot with only morning sun or in the shade is recommended. The soil should be acidic, rich in humus and well-drained. Avoid heavy, wet clay soil. When planting, mix in a generous amount of compost or rhododendron soil to improve the structure and acidity of the existing soil.

Hassle-free care

Light pruning immediately after flowering (in spring) is usually sufficient to keep the shape neat and stimulate new shoots. The plant likes constant moisture, especially during dry periods or in pots; the soil should remain moist without becoming soggy. In spring, you can add some acidic compost or special fertiliser for acid-loving plants to support growth and flowering.

How is Rhododendron used in the garden?

Rhododendron is ideal for multiple applications. As a solitary plant, it is very impressive. In groups, it creates colour zones within the garden. Compact or re-flowering varieties such as Perfecto Mundo® are ideal at entrances, along paths or in pots.

Rhododendron in your garden

Rhododendron is a versatile, evergreen shrub that brightens up your garden in spring and continues to provide structure and foliage value. With the Proven Winners® selection, you can choose extra colour, bonus flowering or compact growth. With the right location and care, you will enjoy this ornamental plant for years to come.

FAQ

What kind of soil does Rhododendron need?

Rhododendrons grow best in acidic soil with a pH of around 4.5 to 6. The soil must be rich in humus and well-aerated so that the roots get enough oxygen. Good drainage is essential, as rhododendrons do not tolerate wet feet. Using special rhododendron soil or pine needle compost when planting will give the shrub a healthy start and rich flowering.

Can rhododendrons tolerate sun?

The ideal location is partial shade. Morning sun or filtered light under tall trees is perfect. In bright midday sun, the leaves can burn or dry out, which also reduces the beauty of the flowers. Rhododendrons will grow in full shade, but flowering may be less profuse.

How and when should I prune Rhododendron?

Pruning is usually not necessary, but light shaping immediately after flowering keeps the shrub compact and stimulates new shoots. You can carefully cut away dead flower clusters to prevent the plant from losing energy to seed formation. Avoid heavy pruning in autumn, as the flower buds for the following year will already have formed.

Can rhododendrons grow in pots?

Yes, rhododendrons are ideal for growing in pots or containers, provided the soil is acidic, airy and moisture-retentive. Use a large pot with drainage holes and place it in a sheltered spot. In cold winters, it is advisable to give the pot extra protection against frost, for example by insulating it or temporarily placing it closer to a wall.

What is the advantage of Proven Winners® varieties?

The Proven Winners® range includes rhododendrons that offer that little bit extra. Bollywood®, for example, offers ornamental value throughout the season thanks to its strikingly variegated foliage and bright pink flowers in spring. The Perfecto Mundo® varieties are special because they rebloom in late summer. These Proven Winners® selections combine reliable growth with unique characteristics such as compact form, unusual leaf colours or an extra-long flowering period.
