Punica (pomegranate): Mediterranean pomegranates and brightly coloured flowers

Punica, better known as pomegranate, brings a touch of the Mediterranean to the garden. This graceful shrub or small tree is particularly striking for its bright orange to red flowers that bloom from late spring to late summer. With their cup-shaped petals and glossy green leaves, they have an exotic look that immediately adds warmth and atmosphere. Punica is evergreen under most conditions but will lose its leaves in colder climates during moderate to severe frost. Punica has limited winter hardiness, so in colder climates the plant must overwinter in a frost-free location.

The Proven Winners® range includes Punica Pompommy®: a dwarf variety that grows to a height of only 90–120 cm. This makes it ideal for planting in a pot, so that in cold climates it can be brought indoors in winter and kept as a houseplant.

What makes Punica so special?

Punica granatum is a deciduous shrub that originates from the Mediterranean region. The plant flowers throughout the summer with striking orange cup-shaped flowers. The flowers contrast beautifully with the dark green foliage and attract bees and butterflies. After flowering, pomegranates form, fruits with their characteristic crown.

The Proven Winners® selection Pompommy® is a dwarf variety with compact growth, the same long flowering period and striking flowers and fruits.

Location and growth

Punica likes warmth and light. A sunny, sheltered spot is ideal for optimal flowering. Plant it preferably in a place where it gets the most hours of sun. The soil type does not matter much. Punica is highly resistant to drought. In cooler climates, Punica is best kept in a pot so that it can be placed in a sheltered spot in winter.

Care: Mediterranean simplicity

Although it has an exotic appearance, Punica does not require complicated care. Prune in early spring to keep the shrub compact and vigorous, and remove old or weak branches. In harsher winters, protection may be necessary for a potted Punica.

Use in the garden

Punica is ideal for creating a Mediterranean atmosphere. It looks beautiful as a solitary eye-catcher in a sunny border, but does particularly well in a large pot on a terrace or balcony. The brightly coloured flowers combine beautifully with lavender, sage and olive for a southern style. Thanks to the compact growth of Pompommy®, pomegranate can also be used in smaller gardens and city gardens where space is limited.

Punica Pompommy® in your garden!

Punica Pompommy® is a compact pomegranate that flowers profusely throughout the summer with striking orange-red flowers. This strong shrub is evergreen and moderately hardy. Its compact growth makes it very suitable for a pot on the patio (or even as a houseplant in winter). Choose Pompommy as an exotic, sunny, colourful eye-catcher in your garden.
