Weigela adds colour to your garden
Weigela brings cheer to any garden. The shrub is known for its profusion of flowers in spring, and the Proven Winners® varieties provide even more colour and longer flowering. They remain compact, develop attractive foliage in various shades and often continue to flower well into summer.
During flowering, the branches are covered with trumpet-shaped flowers in white, pink or red – a magnet for bees and butterflies. Even after flowering, Weigela remains attractive to look at, with fresh green, red or variegated foliage that adds colour throughout the season. Due to its strong growth and easy care, Weigela fits anywhere: in a border, as a hedge or simply as an eye-catcher in the garden.
What makes Weigela so special?
Weigela is a deciduous shrub that originates from East Asia. In spring and early summer, trumpet-shaped flowers appear in shades of white, pink or red. They are not only beautiful, but also rich in nectar, attracting bumblebees, bees and butterflies.
After flowering, the shrub remains attractive thanks to its foliage, which ranges in colour from fresh green to variegated or deep red. Some varieties even combine foliage colour and flowers well into the summer. This means that Weigela offers year-round ornamental value, making it particularly suitable as a base plant for borders and hedges.
Proven Winners® selections: colour and vigour in every season
The Proven Winners® range includes a wide variety of species selected for their health, ornamental value and ease of use. Bubbly Wine® combines dark pink flowers with variegated foliage that adds colour even outside the flowering period. Colourtwist® Sunny Side Up surprises with white flowers and a sunny yellow centre, while Colourtwist® Trilogy and Twopink provide extra variety in shades of white, pink or red.
For small gardens and pots, there are compact varieties such as My Monet Sunset®, with variegated foliage that turns warm colours in autumn. Fólias Verde® adds elegance with its fresh lime green leaves with dark brown edges. Each selection has been developed to flower reliably for years while requiring little maintenance.
Location and care: the basis for success
Weigela feels most at home in a sunny spot. The more sun, the richer the flowering and the more intense the leaf colour. The plant is therefore very drought tolerant.
The shrub likes nutritious, well-drained soil. When planting, it helps to work in compost or organic material for a healthy start. Pruning is not necessary, but you can do it to keep the plant in shape immediately after flowering.
Use in the garden: endless combinations
Weigela is suitable for almost any garden style. It can be used as a solitary eye-catcher, in groups as a colourful border shrub or even as a loose hedge. Compact selections such as My Monet Sunset® are ideal for small gardens, while more vigorous varieties such as Colourtwist® Sunny Side Up make a statement in larger borders.
With their colourful foliage and flowers, Weigelas combine beautifully with perennials such as salvia, lavender and ornamental grasses. This creates a border that remains dynamic and attractive throughout the season.
