The summer garden: this is how to have a feast of colours for months on end

Summer is here and that means only one thing: endlessly enjoying the beautiful flowering plants in your garden or on your balcony! You can choose from many kinds of summer flowering shrubs, in all kinds of colours and with different flowering times. With these tips, you will have colour in your garden all summer long and your plants will come through the summer in good shape.

Give them a good spot

Do you also want a flowering garden in summer? Then plant shrubs that are known to be at their best in the summer months. Such as Buddleja (butterfly bush), Hypericum (St. John’s wort) or Vitex (chaste tree). Think in advance where you want to put them and whether they are suitable for that location.  For instance, Vitex can withstand drought very well and Hypericum prefers slightly moist soil.

Create a flower relay!

For an extra-long floral display: choose plants that 'succeed' each other in terms of flowering or flower all summer. For example, if you choose a combination of Calycanthus (sweetshrub), Spiraea, Buddleja, Hydrangea and Caryopteris, you are guaranteed to have a flowering summer garden from June to October.

Create your own atmosphere

Choose a nice colour combination that suits you. There is so much to choose from, whether you like bright colours or a softer tones. Which combinations do we like? How about the blue-purple flowering Vitex Blue Diddley and the yellow flowers of Hypericum Sunny Boulevard for a cheerful look. Or choose Hydrangea Little Quick Fire® and Spiraea Double Play® Doozie, if you like warmer tones.

A little attention

Summer is a great time to be outside; it's warm and the sun is shining. Remember that the plants in your garden could use a little extra water during dry and hot periods. Give them a generous amount of water once a week (or more if necessary) and they will reward you with their fresh look and beautiful flowers all summer long.

With a nice spot for the plants, a smart choice, your creativity and some extra care, you can enjoy your summer garden to the full during the summer months!
